A brief History of College
The National Homoeopathic Medical College (NHMC) and Hospital, Lucknow, holds a unique position in medical history as one of the oldest and most prestigious institutions for homeopathic education in India. Its journey from a private initiative to a premier government institution reflects the growth of homeopathy in the region.
Founding and Early Development (1912–1950)
The origins of the college date back to the early 20th century, a time when homeopathic education was largely unorganized in North India.
The First Seeds (1912):
The very first foundation for homeopathic education in Lucknow was laid by Dr. G. N. Ohdedar in 1912. However, this initial effort lasted only until 1920.
Establishment (1921):
The college we know today was formally established in 1921 by Dr. B. S. Tandon. Recognizing the need for a structured curriculum, Dr. Tandon took on the “herculean task” of founding the National Homoeopathic Medical College and Hospital.
The First Principal:
Dr. G. C. Das was appointed as the first Principal. He was a notable figure in the field, having been a direct disciple of the legendary Dr. J. T. Kent of Chicago, USA.
Formal Recognition:
In 1938, the institution was registered under the Societies Registration Act. During this era, the college initially offered a 2-year H.M.B. course, which was later upgraded to a 3-year course in 1940.
Path to Academic Excellence (1950–1980)
The mid-20th century marked a series of academic upgrades that cemented NHMC’s reputation.
Asia’s First Degree College:
In 1961, NHMC achieved a historic milestone by becoming Asia’s first degree college of Homeopathy after its affiliation with Agra University.
Provincialization (1968):
A turning point occurred in 1968 when the Government of Uttar Pradesh took over the college, turning it into a state-run (government) institution.
University Transitions:
Over the decades, the college saw various affiliations to maintain its standards, moving between Agra University and Kanpur University.
Modern Era and Infrastructure (2000–Present)
The college eventually outgrew its original premises in the older parts of the city.
Gomti Nagar Campus (2000):
A significant development was the construction of a modern campus in Viraj Khand, Gomti Nagar. The new building was inaugurated on February 27, 2000, by the then Prime Minister of India, Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee.
Current Status:
Today, the college is affiliated with the Mahayogi Guru Gorakhnath AYUSH University (and formerly Dr. B.R. Ambedkar University, Agra). It offers the 5.5-year BHMS degree and several MD (Hom.) postgraduate specializations.
